Tomorrow's Stars Tonight 08
On March 12, 2008 , Newark School of the Arts (NSA) 14 th annual fundraising gala, Tomorrows' Stars Tonight, chaired by Edward B. Hubbard, President and COO of XL Capital Assurance brought 130 guests and over $160,000 in contributions and ticket sales. Leadership, benefactor and patron gifts for the event came from Inter-Atlantic Group, XL Capital Assurance, KPMG, Lehman Brothers, MBIA, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Prudential Financial, the Hubbard Family Charitable Fund, and Goldman, Sachs & Company.

Stephen Shiman, Executive Director of NSA thanked honoree's Stephen T. O'Hearn, Client Service Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Marc Silverman, Chairman of the Piano Department at the Manhattan School of Music. Mr. O'Hearn has been involved with the Newark School of the Arts since 2005 and has been active in fundraising activities on behalf of the School. Dr. Silverman has performed throughout the United States , Europe and Asia as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician. The School honored Dr. Silverman for his gifts as a teacher and performer. He recently taught a master class for advanced piano students at Newark School of the Arts and is currently teaching Patricio Molina, one of NSA finest students.

After cocktails, a dinner call was performed by trumpeter Vladimir Anselevich. Student performances throughout the evening featured tenor student Yakim Manasseh Jordan who sang Bononcini's Per la gloria d'adoravi accompanied by faculty member Karina Bruk on piano. It was followed by Mozart's Duettino (Marriage of Figaro) performed by soprano students Caroline Braga and A-La Davis with Music Director/voice instructor Nadine Herman accompanying on piano.

After the presentation of awards, a drama presentation featured Rachelle Dorce and Hashim Simpson as Helena and Demetrius in an excerpt from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, "An Interlude in the Woods." Following the drama presentation were piano students Angela and Ester Ryu, Patrico Molina who performed Compton 's C.S. Theme and Variations-Opus 6 and Revolutionary Etude, Opus 10, No. 12 .

Saxophonist Leo Johnson, pianist Michael Costantino and bassist Thaddeus Exposé performed a series of jazz pieces throughout the evening including a piece dedicated to the School's Co-founder Saunders Davis who passed away on March 9, 2008 .

NSA provides instruction in the performing (music, dance, drama) and visual arts for people of all ages, regardless of their financial need or artistic ability. The School has been an incubator for artists and for professional people in many fields. A significant number of NSA alumni have made arts their careers, including dancer Savion Glover. The School has been recognized by the New Jersey Council on the Arts, which designated NSA a "Major Presenting Organization" for 2007-2009; and awarded the School a "Citation of Excellence" and designated the School a "Major Service Organization" during 2003 to 2006.

Newark School of the Arts is funded in part by New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, A Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Other major support for the School's arts education programs comes from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The Prudential Foundation, The Victoria Foundation, Turrell Fund and The Hearst Foundation.

THE ART OF SAUNDERING

The End of Year Concert on June 19 th at Essex County Mary B. Burch Theater was a tribute to the late Saunders Davis, Co-Founder of Newark School of the Arts. The program featured performances by NSA students in dance, music, and drama. The 450-seat theater was filled to capacity with parents, friends and relatives of concert performers. During intermission, tributes to Davis Saunders included speakers Elizabeth Haden, Principal-Weequahic High School , Torrence Burrowes, NSA Board President, Donna Holmes, NSA drama instructor and others. The tributes were followed shortly by a presentation compiled by piano instructor, Jessica Walker and a performance by Kendra Clarke, Rita Shiman and Andrew Karasoff playing Pavane Opus 50 by Fauree. The concert represented a variety of genres from classical music to hip-hop dance, jazz, ballet, modern dance, string ensemble and tap.

NSA CAROLLO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND CONCERT AT NJPAC

CAROLLO SCHOLARSHIP

On Wednesday, May 28 at 7:00 pm twelve outstanding student musicians awed the audience through their extraordinary performances at New Jersey Performing Arts Center 's (NJPAC) Chase Room . The students who study at Newark School of the Arts are NJPAC/Jeffrey Carollo Scholarship recipients and some of the most talented music students residing in New Jersey . They include sopranos' Caroline Braga and A-La Reneé Davis and pianists Christine Afable, Gabriel Cano, Stephen DeChiaro, Phoebe Feng, Anita Mo, Patricio Molina, Angela Ryu, Esther Ryu, Kevin Sung and Pauline Tarife.

Performances included classic solo and chamber pieces by composers such as Brahams, Chopin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, and Schubert. The students' instructors, some who performed alongside their students included Music Director and soprano Nadine Herman and pianists Karina Bruk, Eddy Contreras and Eugene Feigin.

The NJPAC Jeffrey Carollo Music Scholarship at the Newark School of the Arts, now going into its twelve year, is made possible by the MCJ and Amelior Foundation and The Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation. The Scholarship administered by NJPAC's Arts Education Department, was established in the fall of 1997 at the behest of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas and Judith Carollo of Toms River , in honor of their late son, Jeffrey, a gifted musician. Scholarships provide comprehensive training in music for talented young artists. The classes are held at NSA and include private lessons, music theory, music history and ensembles. Students must be under the age of 18 and participate in an audition process to qualify for a scholarship.

The School is extremely proud of the accomplishments of these and past Jeffrey Carollo Scholarship recipients, many who have gone on to study at music conservatories including Manhattan and Mannes School of Music.

ARTS IN THE PARK FLEA MARKET IN LINCOLN PARK

The Friends of NSA in collaboration with the parents of NSA planned "Arts in the Park" Flea Market as a means of raising money for the School and its programs. The event was held on June 14 , 2008 in historic Lincoln Park . Bob Simmons, Friends of NSA President spearheaded the event. The event coincided with Families and Friends Day developed through the Newark Division of Recreation/ Cultural Affairs office and the Lincoln Park Cultural Coast District (LPCCD). The Friends of NSA raised approximately $650 for the School. The Friends of NSA have been fundraising for the School for more than 25 years, including their "Look Who's Cooking" fundraiser each fall.
