ANNUAL GALA – TOMORROW’S STARS TONIGHT
On March 14, 2007, Newark School of the Arts (NSA) 13th annual fundraising gala - Tomorrow’s Stars Tonight chaired by Robert Lichten, Co-Chairman of Inter-Atlantic Group brought 180 guests and over $186,000 in contributions and ticket sales. Benefactor and patron gifts for the event came from Inter-Atlantic Group, XL Capital Assurance, Deloitte, KPMG, Lehman Brothers, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Prudential Financial, Patti and Ray Chambers, Morgan Stanley, and The Williams Capital Group.
Stephen Shiman, Executive Director of NSA thanked honoree’s C. Edward Chaplin, Nicholas and Judy Carollo. Mr. Chaplin, Trustee Emeritus and past President of the School’s Board of Trustees played a critical role in advancing the school through his leadership. Nicholas and Judith Carollo were recognized for making the Jeffrey Carollo Scholarship program at NSA in association with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center possible for many young people.
A drum ensemble directed by faculty member Thomas Price led off the gala. Drum students Elisha Blocker, Tanazah Eason and Nigel Plumb performed Razzle-Dazzle by Rock by J. Tatgenhorst. A call to dinner featured a trumpet solo by Vladimir Anselevich.
The gala featured performances by Carollo Scholarship recipients which included a piano solo with spoken word by Patricio Molina and poetry read by NSA Board President Torrence Burrowes. Vocal soloists April Bender and A-La Davis performed pieces by W.A. Mozart accompanied by Nadine Herman, Director of Music at NSA. In addition, Esther Ryu performed a piano solo by Zoya Vitkind. Other student performances included a young string ensemble with Dalila Haden, Genesis Stubbs, Taylor Leake, Olivia Goode, Joshua, Prichett, Bryan Marsano and Helen Miller, conducted by Julia Sakharova.
NSA faculty violinist Julia Sakharova accompanied by pianist Karina Bruk performed Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen. Throughout the event, saxophonist Leo Johnson, pianist Michael Costantino and bassist Thaddeus Exposé performed a series of jazz pieces.
NSA provides instruction in the performing (music, dance, drama) and visual arts for people of all ages, regardless of their financial need or artistic ability. The School has been an incubator for artists and for professional people in many fields. A significant number of NSA alumni have made arts their careers, including dancer Savion Glover. The School has been recognized by the New Jersey Council on the Arts, which designated NSA a “Major Presenting Organization” for 2007-2009; and awarded the School a “Citation of Excellence” and designated the School a “Major Service Organization” during 2003 to 2006.

NSA 40th Anniversary Sale: Arts Education for Half Price
The Newark School of the Arts provides training in music, dance, drama and the visual arts for children and adults of all ages from Newark and an 11 county area in northern New Jersey.
For the second semester beginning in February , the School is offering an exciting promotion to celebrate its 40th anniversary. New students may take one course for half-price. There is no age restriction. Existing registrants at NSA may take an additional course for half-price.
The School of the Arts has an international faculty with conservatory credentials, and the school has an outstanding reputation with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, with present and past designations for excellence, as a major service center, and as a presenting organization.
